Shows for Primary Schools

Balloon Science- for K-2 (50 minutes)

Students will see many fantastic scientific demonstrations that seem like magic but really are science. These include exploding hydrogen balloons, spooky fog (dry ice) balloon helicopters that fly to the roof and back, liquids that mysteriously change colour(chemical reactions) students dance and jump to science songs and laugh at the jokes of Rusty the Robotic Clown and see juggling and unicycling, all in the one great show. Concepts covered include Hot and Cold, Forces, Energy, Introductions to Solids, Liquids and Gases and Scientific Terminology

Moove and Groove with Energy – for K-2 (50 Minutes)

This show explores what energy is (energy makes things move, work or go) different types of energy (heat, light, sound) and sources of energy (food, sun, fuel, etc). Visually dynamic demonstrations are used throughout the show to show transformations of energy. Comic interplay between the characters, The JollyWizard and his humorous sidekick, Rusty the Robot, keep the students totally engaged. Student scientist volunteers help with experiments, which interweave basic scientific principles such as safety, observation and prediction. A great introduction for K-2 students, especially, to scientific literacy and terminology.

Science with an Aboriginal Perspective – for K-2 (50 Minutes) for 3-6 (1 hour)

This show entitled “Flight, Sound and Fire – Science with an Aboriginal Perspective" essentially looks at the scientific principles behind some of the great inventions and environmental understandings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Peoples. Students will discover the complex science behind the Boomerang – the first man made flying machine. Learn about the science of sound and the Didgeridoo. Find out about the inventions of the great Aboriginal Scientist (and face of the $50 note) David Unaipon and discover how Indigenous Peoples of the Northern Territory today are helping cut Greenhouse Gases with their Caring for Country Fire Management Practices. All of these concepts are presented with student interaction in all demonstrations. Note well. This is not an Aboriginal Cultural Show –it is a science show. The Jollybops would like to acknowledge the advice received from Aboriginal Educators and Aboriginal Technology Craftsperson’s in developing this show.

Alchemists and Wizards – for 3-6 (1 hour)

Who were these strange and mysterious figures who mixed chemistry with magic whilst trying to turn lead into gold or produce elixirs of life? History meets Science in this show as metals burn, gases explode and colours of liquids instantly change. Through a series of visually striking and well organized experiment, students are led to recognize the processes of observing, investigating and predicting possible scientific outcomes. Concepts covered include Physics, Chemistry, Magnetism, Newton’s Law, Solids, Liquids and Gases, Atoms, Newton’s Law and Physical versus Chemical Changes.

Natural Phenomena and Energy – for 3-6 (1 hour)

This show delivers a barrage of high energy experiments. Visually dynamic demonstrations are used throughout the show to show transformations of energy. Students will learn about the explosive fuel of the future, hydrogen, see many items freeze and shatter under the stress and strain of the super cold liquid nitrogen, watch materials burn, watch air crush an aluminum can, learn more about the properties of solids, liquids and gases. The material is presented in an entertaining and engaging manner. Comic interplay between the two characters, The JollyWizard and his humorous sidekick keep all students totally engaged, without compromising the scientific integrity of the highly informative scientific content.

What the? Science or Magic - for 3-6 (1 Hour)

In a humorous and most dynamic manner, students will watch a myriad of scientific demonstrations that will seem to them to be Magic but will indeed be science. The children will be introduced to a series of scientific concepts including properties of gases, force, air pressure, gravity and its relationship to properties of materials, temperature and energy. Rusty the Robot and the JollyWizard use juggling, magic, comic pantomime, unicycling to keep the kids in total awe, thinking, sitting and laughing on the edge of their seats.
